Hit a limit? Rewake picks it back up.

A free, open-source add-on that picks your coding agent's session back up, automatically, once a usage limit resets.

Recorded offline with Claude Code 2.1.292 and Agent Rewake 0.6.3. A stand-in for Anthropic's servers supplies the limit and the replies; what Claude Code and Rewake print is exactly what they print. The limit resets at 3:00 AM, and Rewake continues a minute later; the wait is shortened here.

In one minute

Watch a thread pick itself back up.

A coding agent stops at its limit at 3 AM. Nobody's there to type "continue". Rewake is.

Install

Up and running in under a minute.

  1. Run one command

    npx @codizelabs/agent-rewake install

It shows what it found on your computer, Zed and each coding agent with its version, and what Rewake does in each.

  2. Pick where

Tick the places you want, see every change together, and answer once. Nothing is written before that. Everything except Zed is a preview.

  3. Restart that tool

Zed: quit and reopen it, then open a thread in its Agent Panel.

A terminal agent: start a new session. Codex asks you once to trust Rewake's hooks.

Install for one place only

Name the place with --only to skip the list. Each command changes only that place, and shows what it will do before it does it.

The problem

Usage limits stop the work, often hours before you're back.

It's 11 PM and your agent is halfway through a refactor. It stops: the usage limit resets at 3 AM. Nobody is there to type "continue", so the work waits.

At 8 AM you open the laptop and find it exactly where it stopped, with the limit long since reset. With Rewake, the same session picks the work back up at 3:01 AM, and in the morning you find it further along. (For that, the computer has to be on and awake: when it sends.)

Coding agents run on plans with rolling limits. When one is reached mid-task, the agent stops, in an editor or in a terminal, and usually nothing picks the work back up: you have to come back after the reset and type something.

You've hit your session limit · resets 3:45pm

Claude Code also has a weekly limit, and the limits are shared between Claude and Claude Code. Checked 9 October 2026.

Resume after a usage limit

Your session continues as soon as the limit resets.

When the agent stops at its limit, Rewake offers to continue. In Zed, the thread asks once, with your resume message ready to edit. Claude Code asks once in the session. In Codex, you type rewake. A closed Claude Code, Copilot CLI, Gemini CLI, Grok Build, Qwen Code, OpenCode or Antigravity CLI session continues with agent-rewake continue. Then come back to work that kept going.

  • Automatic, if you want: say so once, and Rewake continues without asking when the reset is within a day.
  • Follows the agent: if it's still limited, Rewake waits for the new reset time.
  • Careful with your account: credit and billing limits are never resumed, and an automatic resume more than a day away is confirmed with you first.

Also

Send a message later, once or on a repeat.

In Zed, pick Schedule a message… in the Rewake menu, type the message and pick a time. Rewake sends it into the thread as if you typed it, right after the agent's current reply if it's busy. In Claude Code, type /rewake in 1h Run the tests.

  • Repeat it: hourly, on weekdays, or any cron schedule, read back in plain words before it's saved.
  • Or ask the agent: it can propose a follow-up, and nothing is scheduled until you approve.
  • See everything: one schedules page lists every message across your threads.

How it works

It works where your agent already runs.

Rewake gets into each place the way that place allows, and decides every resume with the same rules: it asks unless you said otherwise, asks again for a reset more than a day away, and never resumes a credit or billing limit that waiting won't fix.

Inside Claude Code (preview)

Rewake's plugin runs inside the Claude Code session. It sees the limit, asks once, and continues the same session after the reset. When Claude Code's own continue will do that, the plugin leaves it to Claude Code. Keep Claude Code open.

Codex and the closed-session previews

The agent's own hooks tell Rewake about the limit. When you agree, the system's own timer runs Rewake once at the reset, and it continues the same session: through Codex's own queue (if Codex is closed then, when you next open it), or with the agent's own resume command once the session is closed. No Rewake process waits in between. Keep the computer on and awake.

Install once

npx @codizelabs/agent-rewake install shows what it found, then every change, and asks once. Your agents keep their names, threads and sessions. The steps.

One command

In Zed, the Rewake menu under the message box. Everywhere, /rewake: at a limit it continues after the reset. In Zed and Claude Code, /rewake in 1h Run the tests sends a message later. In Codex, type rewake without the slash.

Keep it running

Zed or Claude Code stays open while a resume waits. For the other previews, only the computer needs to stay on and awake. When it sends.

Honest limits

When it sends, and when it can't.

Rewake has no always-on service. In Zed it runs inside Zed, in Claude Code inside Claude Code, and for the other previews the system's own timer starts it at the reset. (On Linux without systemd or at, such as WSL and containers, it runs its own process, but only while a resume is waiting.) This is exactly what that means.

Trust

What Rewake will never do.

Rewake sends messages into your agent while you may be away, so these are the lines it keeps. The code is open, so each can be checked, and the privacy and security page says how.

  • Approve anything for you

A permission prompt during a resumed reply waits for you.

  • Add a permission-bypass flag

A resumed session is never given more permission than it had. The one approval flag Rewake passes is Gemini CLI's own default mode, which never widens yours. In Zed, you choose whether threads that bypass permissions are resumed automatically.

  • Type into your terminal

It works through each agent's own plugin, hooks or resume command, and in Zed through the connection between Zed and the agent.

  • Resume a limit that waiting won't fix

Credit, billing and spending limits get a message, not a resume.

  • Send what you didn't choose

Only the messages you scheduled, ones you approved, or the resume message you turned on. One line it can add to a resume, saying the project changed while it waited, is off unless you choose it.

  • Send anything about you anywhere

It sends nothing about you over the network unless you turn on error reports (off by default), and it never sees your credentials: sign-in stays with your agent. Its other network use is fetching an agent's own program when Zed hasn't. Logs hold no message text.

  • Be hard to remove

One command, npx @codizelabs/agent-rewake uninstall, shows every change, asks once and takes Rewake out of every place it's set up in.

What Rewake sends runs with your account while you may be away. Turn on automatic resume only for threads you'd let run unattended. The security policy.

Compared

Where the other ways stop.

Rewake keeps one session going, across every agent you use, from one place. The ways people try instead each cover a corner of that. Checked 2026-10-08.

OptionWhat it coversWhere it stops
Agent RewakeEvery external agent in Zed's Agent Panel, and the same session of Claude Code, Codex, GitHub Copilot CLI, Gemini CLI, Grok Build, Qwen Code, OpenCode or Antigravity CLI (previews). One command, /rewake, and one page for every threadThe previews are early, and a closed session needs the computer on and awake. Rewake never approves a permission prompt for you
Claude Code's own continueClaude, in Claude Code's own terminal sessionsThat one agent only, and nothing is scheduled: no message later, no repeat, no queue. It waits inside the session, so the terminal has to stay open; after the computer sleeps for more than half an hour it asks you to press Enter, and it re-arms at most twice in a row. Rewake steps aside when it handles a limit, and covers the agents and the cases it doesn't
Claude Code /loop and scheduled tasksClaude, inside a session that is already runningRecurring tasks end after seven days, and nothing runs once that session is gone
Community auto-resume scriptsUsually one agent, in a terminal or a tmux paneThey type into a pane, so keystrokes can land in the wrong window; one popular extension drops the time zone the agent gave and waits until the wrong hour; some read an undocumented usage endpoint that isn't in the public API; one needs --dangerously-skip-permissions to run at all, and one can be turned on to answer the agent's permission prompts for you. Several of the most-starred have gone months without a commit

The same comparison, for safety

What Rewake does about each, checked 2026-10-08 against the code of release 0.6.3. For any other way, check its own documentation for the same questions: they change, and not every one is documented.

Questions

Frequently asked.

What happens when Claude hits its usage limit in Zed?

Claude stops with a message such as "You've hit your session limit · resets 5pm", and the thread waits until you come back and type something. With Agent Rewake, the thread asks once whether to resume when the limit resets, with your resume message ready to edit, and sends it as soon as the limit resets.

What happens at a usage limit in Claude Code, Codex or another terminal agent?

With its preview installed: Claude Code asks once whether to continue the session after the reset, then continues it; when Claude Code's own continue will do that, Rewake leaves it to Claude Code. In Codex, type rewake in the thread at the limit (in Claude Code and Gemini CLI, /rewake), and the thread continues after the reset. GitHub Copilot CLI, Gemini CLI, Grok Build, Qwen Code, OpenCode and Antigravity CLI sessions are continued once they're closed: run npx @codizelabs/agent-rewake continue before the reset.

Can it resume automatically, without asking?

Yes, if you turn it on. In Zed: per thread from the Rewake menu (Turn on auto-resume after limits…), or for new threads in Rewake → Settings…. In Claude Code, answer that it should continue from then on; for closed Claude Code, Copilot CLI, Gemini CLI, Grok Build, Qwen Code, OpenCode and Antigravity CLI sessions, run npx @codizelabs/agent-rewake continue --always once. It still asks instead when the reset is more than 24 hours away; in Zed also when the agent gives the same reset time twice, or when you chose to exclude threads that bypass permissions.

Does it work with Codex, Gemini CLI and other agents?

Yes. Rewake goes in front of every external agent Zed runs and works the same way with each: the menu, scheduling, the schedules page and resume after a limit. Claude and Codex say when the limit resets; for agents that don't (Gemini CLI, for example), you pick when to resume. Outside Zed, previews cover Codex, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot CLI, Grok Build, Qwen Code, OpenCode and Antigravity CLI in a terminal.

Does Zed, or anything else, need to stay open?

In Zed, yes: Rewake runs inside Zed, so nothing is sent while Zed is closed or the computer is asleep. You don't need the thread on screen: you can work in other threads. After restarting Zed, open the thread once. A message more than 15 minutes late isn't sent on its own: Rewake asks you.

In Claude Code, keep Claude Code open: Rewake's plugin runs inside it, and a continue that came due while it was closed is offered when you reopen the session. For Codex, GitHub Copilot CLI, Gemini CLI, Grok Build, Qwen Code, OpenCode and Antigravity CLI, nothing needs to stay open: the system's own timer starts Rewake at the reset. Keep the computer on and awake; if Codex is closed then, the thread continues when you next open it.

Claude Code can continue by itself now. What's left for Rewake?

In Claude Code, less than you might think, and Rewake steps aside there: when Claude Code's own "Continue automatically at usage limit" will most likely do it (its setting on, a reset within a day), Rewake leaves the limit to it. It asks to continue when that won't apply: in Claude Code's VS Code and Cursor panel, where that setting doesn't apply, or when the setting is off or the reset is further away.

What's left is everything outside that one case. Claude Code's own continue works in its own terminal sessions and only for Claude; whether it applies to the Claude adapter that Zed runs isn't documented. Rewake covers Codex, GitHub Copilot CLI, Gemini CLI, Grok Build, Qwen Code, OpenCode, Antigravity CLI and every external agent in Zed, from one command and one schedules page, and it sends messages later: once, repeating, or one after another after a resume. Checked 2026-10-08.

Does Rewake get around usage limits?

No. It waits for the reset the agent reports, or the time you pick, then sends one message, as you would. That message uses your plan like any message you type. Your plan, limits and credits don't change, and a credit, billing or spending limit, which waiting won't fix, gets a message and no resume.

What if the reset time is wrong, or the agent is still limited?

Rewake follows the agent: if it's still limited when Rewake continues, it waits for the new reset time. A reset more than a day away is confirmed with you first, even when automatic resume is on. For agents that don't say when their limit resets (Copilot CLI's weekly limit, Grok's free limit, Cursor), you choose the time.

What if I don't want to wait for the reset?

If you upgraded your plan, or the limit lifted early, run npx @codizelabs/agent-rewake continue --now for a resume Rewake planned outside Zed. It names the agent and folder, says what it will send, and asks first; or give the id from agent-rewake schedules. It makes the same checks as at the reset. If you typed in the session, if it is open or has changed, if the agent already continued, if the limit is still on, or if the message can't reach the agent (signed out, session deleted or archived, folder gone), nothing is sent and your resume stays planned for its time. The window stays busy while the agent works, and Ctrl+C stops it and cancels the resume. In Zed, use Rewake → Change a scheduled message….

What if my computer is asleep at the reset?

Nothing is sent while it sleeps. When it wakes, a resume more than half an hour late (15 minutes in Zed) isn't sent on its own: Rewake asks or tells you instead. On macOS (and, not yet tried by hand, Linux with systemd and Windows), Rewake keeps the computer from idling to sleep while a resume is due within six hours (while plugged in, by default); closing the lid still puts it to sleep. agent-rewake doctor says if your own sleep settings would let it sleep, and the docs list the settings to change.

Does Rewake warn me before I hit a limit?

In Claude Code and Codex, yes. The plugin tells you when a usage window passes 80% and 95% used, and when your pace over the last hour would reach the limit within about 45 minutes and before it resets, as a range such as "in about 20 to 40 minutes". It uses only the usage figures Claude Code or Codex already gives it, as of its last reply: no network, no sign-in. It only tells you: in Claude Code, at 80% it mentions /compact (which uses some quota itself), and at 95% (in both) it says it is a good moment to wrap up. It never types or compacts for you. Turn it off with agent-rewake settings usage-warnings off. In Codex the warning comes with your next prompt, from the figures of Codex's previous reply, so it is one turn late; it is not yet seen in the Codex desktop app or the VS Code extension. The other agents are not covered.

What if the project changed while it waited?

Outside Zed, when the session's folder is a git folder, Rewake compares the project's latest commit and its tracked files with how they were when it planned the continue. If they differ, it tells you and sends the message as it was. You can choose that it also adds one fixed line asking the agent to re-read files (note), or sends nothing and asks you first (hold), with agent-rewake settings workspace-changed. New untracked files don't count. It reads only the commit id and the names-and-status summary of git status --porcelain --untracked-files=no, never file contents, and only on your computer.

How do I know it worked?

Run npx @codizelabs/agent-rewake doctor: it lists the continues planned for closed sessions, any that need you, and the last error if one failed. In Zed, the schedules page lists every message and its state, and a message Rewake sends is labelled as coming from Rewake, so you can tell it from one you typed.

Rewake missed my usage limit. What do I send you?

Open a bug report with the agent and its version, the exact limit message as the agent printed it (private details removed), what you expected, and the output of npx @codizelabs/agent-rewake doctor --details. How to report a limit Rewake missed.

Can my agent schedule its own follow-ups?

Yes, but only with your approval. The agent gets tools to schedule, change and cancel messages in its own thread; each request shows a form in the thread, where you can edit the message and accept or decline. It can also read Rewake's guide to answer your questions about Rewake.

Does it change my plan or send my data anywhere?

Rewake sends one message, which uses your plan like any message you type; it doesn't change your plan, limits or credits, and it never approves permission prompts for you. Everything stays on your computer; it sends only the messages you scheduled, to your agent. Besides fetching an agent's own program when Zed hasn't, the only network call Rewake can make on its own is an error report, and that's off unless you turn it on. Logs hold metadata, never message text. What it runs, stores and changes, and how to undo it.

Does it work with Claude Code in a terminal, in VS Code or Cursor, the Claude desktop app, or Zed's own agent?

Claude Code in a terminal, and in its panel in VS Code or Cursor: yes, as a preview. Pick it in npx @codizelabs/agent-rewake install, or run npx @codizelabs/agent-rewake install --only claude-code. The Claude desktop app's Code tab hasn't been tried yet. Claude's own apps (claude.ai and the desktop app's chat) and Zed's own agent can't be reached: Zed doesn't let add-ons into its own agent. Claude Code and the desktop app also each have their own setting to continue after a usage limit.

How do I update it?

From any version: run npx @codizelabs/agent-rewake@latest install, then, in Zed, choose "Reload Agent" in the Agent Panel's menu in each open thread (Zed 1.18 or newer). Quitting Zed completely and opening it again also works. The previews outside Zed use the new version from their next session. Your threads, scheduled messages and settings stay. Any version-specific steps (none so far) are in the docs.

Is it a Zed extension?

No. Zed extensions can't add this, so in Zed, Rewake is an add-on on the Agent Client Protocol (ACP) connection between Zed and your agent. Outside Zed, it uses each agent's own plugins, extensions or hooks. agent-rewake install sets it up in the places you pick, and agent-rewake uninstall takes it out.

More in the troubleshooting guide, or ask your agent: it reads Rewake's guide.
